The Geology and Geomorphology of South Devon

Fancy some adrenaline too? See the coastline from a different perspective with a coasteering adventure, where you will test your nerves and fully embrace the rocky landscape that you’ll be calling home for a week.

Our residentials also give you the chance to develop a range of transferable skills. These types of skills help across many areas of life and are particularly good for including in job or education applications.

If you are doing the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, this course is also an ideal way to complete the ‘Residential’ section of the award.

We want to ensure participants get to share in their experience with those of a similar age. Please consider what age the attendee will be on the course date and check they fit into the age category when booking. 

If the attendee is under 18, the booking must be made by a parent/guardian. When you book, it is essential that you enter the age and attendees name in the Order Notes at the checkout.

When attending the residential dates which welcome 16-18 year olds, all participants will be expected to follow the behaviour and conduct rules which will be in place to safeguard young people.

Example Timetable

Day 1

Arrive 12:00
Local introduction, including a walk around the Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve, leading onto Slapton Sands where you will understand how the landscape has been created, along with an introduction to rock ID.

Evening
Icebreakers and introduction to the week

Day 2

Full day
From the sea to the sky… you will walk the tors of Dartmoor, looking at the industrial history of this amazing landscape. You will also gain technical experience of mineral ID, along with geomorphological mapping and tor formation, all whilst adventuring through some of the UK’s most rugged environments.

Day 3

Day
A coastal day exploring the South Devon coastline.

Evening
Get your hands dirty and test out your culinary skills with handmade pizzas in our wood-fired oven; a great chance to relax and catch up on your week so far.

Day 4

Day
Explore the breathtaking Start Bay coastline right on the field centre’s doorstep. Looking at a different side of the coast we will see how large-scale events have shaped the landscape, including folding and intrusions, and how to measure this. You will then look at the landscape through the eyes of an engineering geologist seeing the issues that this coastline might be facing.

Evening
Reflect on your week around a beach campfire, taking time to see what you’ve learned and how you could develop a future in the field.

Day 5

Morning
Ending your week on a high (literally) you will gain new perspectives and experiences through adrenaline-filled coasteering just off Start Point. Looking at the landscape you have spent all week learning about whilst you swim, jump, and walk your way around the rugged coastline.

Afternoon
Post-course reflections and Duke of Edinburgh finalisation.
