Lakes and Literature

We will visit key locations within the Lake District to help understand what it is about this landscape that is so appealing to writers and poets. Locations such as, Hill Top, the farmhouse that was the source of inspiration for writer Beatrix Potter and Dove Cottage, the former home of poet William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy Wordsworth.

This residential is perfect for those with an interest in English Literature but also have a sense of adventure. We’ll be taking advantage of what the Lake District has to offer with days of hiking, ghyll scrambling and time on Castle Head’s high ropes course.

Our residentials also give you the chance to develop a range of transferable skills. These types of skills help across many areas of life and are particularly good for including in job or education applications. Here are some of the skills that are likely to be covered in this residential:

The course is suitable for a Duke of Edinburgh Award Gold residential.

We want to ensure participants get to share in their experience with those of a similar age. Please consider what age the attendee will be on the course date and check they fit into the age category when booking.

If the attendee is under 18, the booking must be made by a parent/guardian.

When attending the residential dates which welcome 16-18 year olds, all participants will be expected to follow the behaviour and conduct rules which will be in place to safeguard young people.

Afternoon - Introduction and tour of the centre

Evening - Icebreakers and team-building activities

Day 2

Morning and afternoon - Trip on Windermere passenger ferry from Bowness to Claife viewing station, walk to Near Sawery and visit to Hill Top

Evening - Gummers How

Day 3

Morning and afternoon - Visit to Coniston and hike to the summit of Coniston Old Man

Evening - High ropes

Day 4

Morning and afternoon - Visit to Dove Cottage and walk from Rydal to Grasmere via Rydal caves.

Evening - Low ropes

Day 5

Morning and Afternoon - Cathedral quarry, Sea level traverse or Ghyll Scramble

What to bring

• Walking boots
• Waterproof coat and over-trousers
• Plenty of comfortable warm clothes (layering is important as temperatures are changeable at this time of year)
• Clothes you don’t mind getting wet for the ghyll, including old trainers which will get wet
• Towel and personal toiletries.
• Hat and gloves (it can still be cold at this time of year)
• Rucksack (around 25 litres is great for a day sack)
• Lunch box
• Drinks bottles/flask (at least 1 litre)
• Sun cream, sun hat (baseball cap is ideal) and sunglasses
• Small first aid kit for personal use
