21st – 24th August: Minimum age is 8
Families can look forward to a long weekend filled with outdoor adventure, wildlife discovery and shared experiences in some of North Wales’ most inspiring landscapes. The break blends fun, confidence-building activities with opportunities to learn new skills, from map reading and nature spotting to trying out gorge scrambling and rock climbing in safe, supportive settings. There’s also time to explore the centre grounds, investigate the wildlife that visits after dark, and enjoy relaxed moments together around the campfire.
Overall, it’s a chance for families to reconnect with nature, spend quality time outdoors and make lasting memories in a beautiful setting.
Please note: In-course transport is provided for families. As per the latest government guidance, Field Studies Council do not provide car seats for our minibuses, if you require your child to travel in a car seat you will need to provide your own.
Explore our range of family nature holidays, which help you and your family reconnect with nature. Our family holidays are a chance for you to disconnect from everyday life and get back to nature. They are a great opportunity to experience the UK’s glorious countryside surrounding our field centres.
Example Timetable
Here are a few extra bits of information which could be useful when getting ready for the trip. Because of the adventurous elements in this course, we have set the minimum age of participants at 8 years old.
The schedule for the week is flexible and may change around to account for the weather and/or other factors, but this is the outline plan.
Day 1
Arrival and welcome – The session will begin at 4pm, so please arrive from midday onwards. Welcome tour of the centre with your tutor. Ice breakers and team building activities.
Orienteering - Complete an orienteering course set up around the Centre grounds using a map and developing map skills.
Day 2
A big day out in the wild in Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve. We will be walking in this spectacular post glacial landscape with nature spotting guides. We will practice our navigation skills using maps and compasses and we will enjoy lunch out.
Mammals and Moths - Have a go at setting up humane mammal and moth traps ready for us to see what has visited us in the morning
Day 3
Mammals and Moths - Discover what has been out at night in our centre grounds by opening our small mammal and moth traps. Learn how traps are used for scientific monitoring and what happens with the data collected.
Gorge Scrambling from Llyn Geirionydd
Participants experience the raw energy of a mountain stream first-hand, as they journey up and down a series of rapids and waterfalls. Teamwork skills will be tested as groups work together to overcome obstacles along the way. The activity can involve walking, climbing, sliding and jumping through the gorge.
Campfire - Come join us for an evening around the campfire on the grounds. Toast some marshmallows and have a good time with your new friends.
Day 4
Rock Climbing on Conwy Slabs - Drive down the beautiful Conwy valley to the outskirts of the walled town of Conwy. Walking up towards Conwy mountain, groups will then challenge themselves to summit Conwy slabs and take in the spectacular views across to Anglesey, down the north Wales coast and back down the Conwy valley. Groups could have time to explore Conwy on this day and could depart from this area rather than heading back to the centre.
This session will finish at 12pm. Wave goodbye to new friends.
