The ‘Identifying Freshwater Invertebrates’ course has completely surpassed my expectations. Firstly, the location couldn’t be more perfect: Malham Tarn boasts a variety of freshwater habitats from an alkaline lake and adjacent raised bog to a crystal-clear beck. Each of these (habitats) has a unique assemblage of invertebrates, which are explored within the course. Secondly, the course leaders, Sharon and Peter are extremely knowledgeable and likeable. Their stories and facts made the invertebrates come alive. Last but not least, the course really pushes you to explore, be curious (rather than afraid) of taxonomy. I was very surprised to find how much my ID skills have improved in just three days. I’m hoping to return next year for the caddis course.
