Gain practical experience in biological skills and techniques. Students will undertake small scale fieldwork projects using a range of equipment. Fieldwork will include site observations, local frequency measurements using quadrats, systematic sampling, random sampling and stratified sampling in grassland, woodland & freshwater habitats (exact habitats studied will depend on Centre booked).

Example Timetable

The course normally runs 10am – 3pm.  There will be an allocated lunch slot, the timing will depend on the final course programme.

Pre Course / Prior Learning

  • An awareness of working scientifically experimental skills and investigations and relevant terminology

  • Welcome and Introduction
  • Setting and sharing Objectives
  • Starter: Working Scientifically, and equipment introduction.

  • In small groups, students will carry out mini investigations to become familiar with biotic and abiotic factors and equipment that can be used to measure them.
    • Mini investigation 1: systematic sampling
    • Mini investigation 2: random sampling
    • Mini investigation 3: Stratified sampling

  • In small groups, students
  • Plan their own investigation
    • making predictions.
    • plan and carry out a scientific enquiry to test predictions.
  • Carry out an investigation:
