A days walk to unfold the rich tapestry of wildlife, landscapes and history that defines Epping Forest. En route we will look at some of the stories, natural history and cultural heritage which make Epping Forest such a special place, and take you to some of our favourite places off the beaten track. Course fee includes FSC fold out chart: Guide to the Seasons. During our walks various tree species will be identified and we will also take a look at their pollarding. We shall also explore the ground beneath our feet, looking at how geology has created the landscape we see today. During the walk we aim to include Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting lodge, visit remnants from WW2 and an Iron Age hillfort. The other focus of the day will be on the fauna of the forest, doing some dipping for pondlife and looking out for birds and deer.

Eddie Jones is a Tutor at FSC Epping Forest with a passion for outdoor learning and a range of interests including geography, local history, ecology and hiking.
Example Timetable
09.30 Registration
10.00 Loughton Camp and Connaught Water (Approx. 3 ½ miles)- Our morning walk takes in an Iron Age Fort, pollarded woodland, and some of the forests lakes.
13.00 Lunch- Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge- Lunch is taken at this historical spot, complete with amenities.
13.30 Pole Hill, Lippitts Hill and High Beach (Approx. 5miles)- After a leisurely lunch the walk continues, taking in Epping Forests ties to WW1 and WW2. If the weather is good this walk has stunning views over London and the Lea Valley.
16.00 Course Finishes
All timings are approximate. This is an outline programme and may be subject to change according to the weather, requirements of the group or access restrictions to field sites on the day of the course. Our courses include some classroom sessions but field visits may be a few hours long and involve walking over uneven ground.
