A climbing based activity week which can be used to build evidence for GCSE PE but is open to anyone looking to get into climbing! The course will cover a range of climbing skills and experiences including learning to belay, climbing on a variety of rock types, abseiling, indoor climbing and high ropes plus the correct use of PPE. This course is aimed at children aged 14-16.

Climbing can help to develop basic movement, agility, balance and coordination as well as build flexibility and strength. Climbing also increase confidence and improves technique and performance in other sports, as well as being a fun and adventurous sport for life.

Spend a week at Castle Head and experience a range of challenges including climbing outside on a variety of rock types, scrambling, abseiling, ghyll scrambling, indoor climbing and high ropes You will learn climbing and belaying techniques, how to effectively communicate with your climbing partner, and experience climbing in the outdoors These activities promote problem solving, effective communication and team working skills essential for succeeding in further education and work place environments.

The course is based at Castle Head on the edge of the Lake District National Park an excellent location from which to access a whole host of climbing and adventurous locations and easily reached by train.

We anticipate that this course will run with between 6 and 12 participants.

Tutor: Centre Staff

This course will be led by our experienced and enthusiastic tutors.

Example Timetable

Monday: Arrive between 12/1pm. The course will start with a centre tour. Please bring your own packed lunch.

Ice breakers and team activities followed by an introduction to climbing and climbing on an indoor wall.

Tuesday: Day out in LDNP climbing with potential for scrambling. The evening will be spent on the centre grounds on the high ropes activity.

Wednesday: Session at Kendal climbing wall and then moving onto the local sea level traverse. The evening will be spent on the centre grounds on the low ropes activity.

Thursday: Day out in Yorkshire climbing and ghyll scrambling.  The evening will be spent on the centre grounds raft building.

Friday: Climb at local crag and then departure at 13:00
