Venue hire and group accommodation at Preston Montford, Shropshire
Nestled on the banks of the River Severn just outside Shrewsbury, Preston Montford is one of Field Studies Council’s most established centres. Set within a beautiful 12-hectare estate, the centre combines outdoor learning, adventure and comfortable accommodation, making it a popular destination for community groups and organisations looking to connect with nature and each other.

Surrounded by rolling Shropshire countryside and with views stretching towards Wales, Preston Montford offers the perfect base for learning, exploration and outdoor experiences. Whether you’re studying local ecosystems, taking part in adventurous activities or simply looking for a peaceful setting for a group stay, there’s something for everyone to discover.
A landscape rich in history and wildlife
One of Preston Montford’s greatest strengths is the variety of habitats right on its doorstep. The estate is home to semi-ancient woodland, flower-rich meadows, freshwater ponds and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) along the River Severn. Visitors can also explore a traditional orchard, wildflower areas and the remains of an eighteenth-century walled garden.
These diverse habitats provide countless opportunities for hands-on learning, wildlife discovery and outdoor exploration throughout the year. From pond dipping and habitat surveys to seasonal nature walks, the grounds themselves become an outdoor classroom.

The perfect gateway to Shropshire and beyond
Ideally located just six miles from Shrewsbury, Preston Montford provides easy access to some of the UK’s most fascinating landscapes and heritage sites. The centre acts as a gateway to the Shropshire Hills, Long Mynd, Stiperstones and Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, while Eryri (Snowdonia) is close enough to visit as part of a day trip.
Its central location also makes the centre easily accessible for groups travelling from across England and Wales, with Birmingham less than an hour away and Manchester, Liverpool and London all within convenient reach.

Adventure and active learning
Alongside its environmental learning opportunities, Preston Montford offers a wide range of adventurous activities designed to build confidence, teamwork and resilience.
Visitors can challenge themselves on the climbing tower, test their balance on the low ropes course, work together to complete the peg pole challenge or develop problem-solving skills on the traverse wall. Canoeing, hiking, bushcraft and orienteering activities encourage participants to engage with the natural environment while developing valuable life skills.
These experiences make Preston Montford particularly popular with youth groups and organisations looking to combine learning with personal development.
