Doreen Warrington was a primary school teacher, but a botanist at heart.
She loved attending courses at our residential field centres, especially those with a botanical or arboriculture focus. On more than one occasion, her late husband joined her, taking part in courses that reflected his own interests, such as industrial archaeology. Together, they shared a love of lifelong learning.
Doreen sadly passed away in May 2023. Passionate about creating opportunities for others to benefit from outdoor education, she chose to leave a gift of £13,693 in her will to the Field Studies Council.
Her generous gift has supported the Grants for Schools programme, which provides financial assistance for schools and students to access outdoor education.
Through this programme, young people gain confidence, independence, and teamwork skills; reduce stress and anxiety while improving mental health; connect with nature; and develop a lifelong passion for the environment. Importantly, it also supports their curriculum-based learning and allows them to experience fieldwork through bursaries for eligible schools.
Doreen’s legacy will enable around 125 disadvantaged young people to take part in residential fieldwork at one of our centres – a lasting and positive impact that we are so grateful for.
