Harry Read

Harry Read is a naturalist and experienced birder based in East Anglia, working as a freelance ecologist on a 6,000-acre estate in Suffolk. He regularly leads ornithological walks and birding experiences for wildlife groups, landowners, local communities and tour companies across the UK and beyond. With over a decade of birding experience, Harry trained under the legendary Suffolk ornithologist Steve Piotrowski, developing a strong grounding in field identification, behaviour and bird vocalisation.

He teaches bird identification courses at the Wakelyns Agroforestry Project, where he combines ecological insight with accessible teaching in the field. Harry contributes as a recorder to several conservation initiatives, including the BTO Breeding Bird Survey and Operation Turtle Dove, and is a keen bird ringer involved with the Barn Owl Support Suffolk conservation project. After completing a degree in Zoology, Harry’s guiding career began in Sweden’s Arctic Circle, before going on to lead wildlife holidays in Finland, searching for the iconic birdlife of the taiga forests alongside its impressive mammalian fauna.

We have four buildings that are used for visitor accommodation. Whilst most rooms are either en-suite or have a dedicated bathroom, there are some rooms in The Mill that share showers and toilets at the end of the hall. If this is un-suitable for you please make the office staff aware upon booking or as soon as possible.
Please be aware that you are visiting a Field Centre that caters in the main for school parties; the accommodation is basic and dormitory style, but warm and comfortable.

Arrival Day

Check-in is between 1600-1800, if you are arriving after 1800 please advise us, so we can ensure you are advised of access codes, room key location, and room location.

You will meet the tutor at dinner, and you will have your first session after dinner.

Full board accommodation and picnic lunch is available for resident bookings only.
Refreshments are included for all, but non-resident bookings are advised to bring lunch with you.

What to bring

• Binoculars.
• A field telescope and tripod if you have one.
• Subdued coloured outdoor clothing appropriate for the time of the year.
• Pen, notebook and a keen sense to learn.
• If you are an RSPB Member please bring along your membership card.
