Join us for Birdwatching: Wader Migration to discover more about this fascinating group of birds.

Waders are a vast and confusing group of birds. This course visits two off site habitats to seek out wading birds and sort out any confusion regarding their identification. We will also explore the area around Flatford.

Transport off site will be by minibus.

We’ll discuss how to identify waders and where they are going to and where they have come from. Our course date is set to coincide with the major influx of wading birds into the UK as they move South from the Arctic Circle.

Please note: This course is not part of the Biodiversity learning framework, this course is organised by Flatford Mill and the tutor.

About the tutor

Harry Read

Harry Read is a naturalist and experienced birder based in East Anglia, working as a freelance ecologist on a 6,000-acre estate in Suffolk. He regularly leads ornithological walks and birding experiences for wildlife groups, landowners, local communities and tour companies across the UK and beyond. With over a decade of birding experience, Harry trained under the legendary Suffolk ornithologist Steve Piotrowski, developing a strong grounding in field identification, behaviour and bird vocalisation.

He teaches bird identification courses at the Wakelyns Agroforestry Project, where he combines ecological insight with accessible teaching in the field. Harry contributes as a recorder to several conservation initiatives, including the BTO Breeding Bird Survey and Operation Turtle Dove, and is a keen bird ringer involved with the Barn Owl Support Suffolk conservation project. After completing a degree in Zoology, Harry’s guiding career began in Sweden’s Arctic Circle, before going on to lead wildlife holidays in Finland, searching for the iconic birdlife of the taiga forests alongside its impressive mammalian fauna.

About Flatford Mill

We have four buildings that are used for visitor accommodation. Whilst most rooms are either en-suite or have a dedicated bathroom, there are some rooms in The Mill that share showers and toilets at the end of the hall. If this is un-suitable for you please make the office staff aware upon booking or as soon as possible.

Please be aware that you are visiting a Field Centre that caters in the main for school parties; the accommodation is basic and dormitory style, but warm and comfortable.

Explore our range of nature courses hosted by our engaging tutors and learn from their expertise and skills. Our art courses are a chance to meet like-minded people, a chance to unwind from everyday life, and a great opportunity to experience the UK’s glorious countryside surrounding our field centres.

This course is open to participants aged 18 and over only. For under-18s, please contact the centre directly or see our young people courses and activities for families.
