Trees are an integral part of the natural world and our well-being. As part of the Trees for Climate Action project, join fellow Bradford and Glasgow residents on a free short online 4-week course that will help you to connect with nature and improve your tree knowledge and skills.

This course is only available for those that meet the eligibility check as part of the Trees for Climate Action project.

Eligibility criteria:

To receive a fully funded place:

  • You must be between the age of 18 – 30

This introductory course will start by looking at what exactly makes a tree, a tree. You will be introduced to tree biology and ecology, and the important roles that trees play in the environment, including mitigating climate change. You will also build the skills necessary to recognise trees that are common in your local area, and learn interesting facts about what shaped the local landscape to look the way it does today, as well as folklore associated with the tree species covered. The course will also introduce you to tree pests and diseases making an impact in Bradford, Glasgow and beyond, and how you can help to protect your local trees. Finally, the course will guide you towards volunteering, working with, and taking action for trees in Bradford or Glasgow.

The course content should take around 2-3 hours each week for 4 weeks.

Prior Knowledge – No existing knowledge or experience is needed for this course, just a willingness to explore and learn.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Understand how trees fit into the plant kingdom, the key differences between broadleaf and conifer trees, and the basic structure of a tree
  • Understand what shaped your local landscape to look the way it does today
  • Understand the basics of tree photosynthesis, life cycles, habitats, niches, and ecosystem services they provide, including mitigating climate change
  • Recognise by key characteristics some of the most common trees that can be found in your area
  • Be able to demonstrate understanding of the basic ecology of tree pests and diseases, as well as name some common tree pests and diseases that can be seen in your area
  • Understand how to begin pursuing related voluntary roles in your city, understand a little more on related career options
  • Know more about taking action for trees in your community
  • Share this knowledge with friends, family and fellow volunteers

About the Trees for Climate Action project

Field Studies Council is able to offer free places on these training courses thanks to the wonderful support of the ‘Trees for Climate Action’ project led by Trees for Cities. This project is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund. The project will deliver inter-generational, tree-related activities for young people to build their knowledge and learn new skills from environmental professionals and experienced volunteers, mobilising young people to take positive action against climate change.
