Project Overview
Trees for Climate Action is a project led by Trees for Cities in partnership with the Field Studies Council. This project will take bold new steps to bring people together, creating opportunities for young people (up to 30) to engage with older people that they would not normally meet during their everyday lives. The project will deliver inter-generational, tree-related activities for young people to build their knowledge and learn new skills from environmental professionals and experienced volunteers, mobilising young people to take positive action against climate change.
Trees for Climate Action aims to engage 20,000 young people in two cities across two nations: Bradford and Glasgow.

Free Tree Guides
Please fill out this form if you would like to be notified when registrations next open for free tree guides. This will be in early 2024.
We are distributing thousands of easy-to-use free tree guides for people to use and share with others where they live, study, and work, in Bradford and Glasgow.
Each tree guide is co-developed with local people and tailored to each city. Each guide is colourful and splash-proof, packed with drawings or photos created by enthusiasts and experts. The guides feature city trails and multiple ways to enjoy trees in Bradford and Glasgow.
As well as two guides in the post, one in spring and another in autumn, successful households or groups will receive ideas by email for finding trees and volunteer and career opportunities to help trees and protect the natural environment.
Registrations are now closed for the first free tree guide distributed in your city. There will be another opportunity to register for guides in early 2024 – so, if you’re aged 12-30* or a parent, teacher, employer, or community/faith group leader engaging this age group, please refer back to this webpage for exact dates closer to the time, or you can register for updates via this form.
No experience is needed to use the guides, just curiosity and a keen eye! Group leaders will receive multiple guides to use with other people.
*Parental consent required if aged 12-15, T&Cs apply.

Free Tree Training
Registrations are now open for our next in-person course, ‘Discovering Trees in Winter’! Please click here to register your interest by 13th October.
The Field Studies Council will be delivering free tree training courses across the two cities from 2023 to late 2025, both in person and online. Courses will have a seasonal focus, taking learners on a journey that will build upon different tree-related skills. No prior experience is needed, just a willingness to explore and learn! You will receive a participation certificate upon completion of your course.
In-person courses: one day courses running roughly once per season in different locations across your city. You will learn both in the classroom and outdoors, practising your newfound skills with the support of your tutor.
Online courses: 4-week courses delivered through our online learning platform, Moodle. This course will run once per year in both cities, and will introduce you to tree biology, ecology, and urban species.
Our next in-person course will be ‘Discovering Trees in Winter‘ taking place in November 2023.

Discovering Trees in Winter

This free one-day introductory course will start by looking at the changes deciduous trees undertake in winter and the key features to use for their identification at this time including buds and twigs. You will also delve into different aspects of tree conservation from tree planting to identifying tree pests and diseases and learn more about how you can take action in your city.
We aim to notify you no less than 2 weeks prior to your course start date whether you have been successful in securing a place.
You will then need to confirm your attendance.
Course dates:
- Bradford: 3rd November 2023 – 10:00 – 16:30, Cliffe Castle Museum & Park (Spring Gardens Lane, Keighley, BD21 6HL)
- Glasgow: 18th November 2023, 10:00 – 16:30, Pollokshaws Burgh Hall (2025 Pollokshaws Rd, Glasgow, G43 1NE)
Registering for a place on this course does not guarantee your attendance – we allocate tree training places based on target audience and availability as per our grant funding – T&Cs apply.

Become a Field Studies Council Tutor
Are you interested in upskilling local young people, whilst developing your own ability as a tutor?
As part of this project, we are looking to train and accredit 12 new tree tutors local to these cities – could this be you or someone you know?
This is a paid opportunity that will see you invested in personally as you join our national tutor network.
If you have the necessary tree knowledge but don’t yet feel confident enough to deliver courses to groups alone – don’t worry, we will help you to build the pedagogical skills and personal confidence through training and mentoring.
Register your interest here, click here to learn more about working with us as a natural history tutor or get in touch at [email protected] if you would like to chat about this opportunity.

Other ways to get involved
We are always looking for people and community groups to chat to who operate on the ground in these cities. Do you have ideas on how we could make this training better for the people of Glasgow or Bradford? Get in touch and let us know!
Do you have a venue in mind that would be perfect for hosting one of our training courses? We ask that venues are accessible via public transport, can comfortably accommodate up to 20 people, have access to a screen/projector for PowerPoint presentations, and have access to greenspace for the field sessions.
If you would like to chat to the team regarding the above or anything else relevant to this project, please get in touch at [email protected].
