On this exciting painting course using the medium of your choice, watercolour, gouache, acrylic, line and wash, pastel, oil or mixed-media. Discover how to connect with the landscape and through a selection process paint in an expressive manner bringing variety and interest to your work.
Whatever your painting style, realistic, expressionistic or abstract, acquire tips for how to simplify and improve your method of painting. We cover handling the paint, creating texture, colour mixing, working with a limited palette, collage, plus a variety of painting techniques and brush handling. Alongside which we cover the fundamental aspects for creating a successful painting which include strong composition, centre of interest, simplifying and selecting what to include. This course is packed with useful information and all painting abilities are welcome. There is nothing like the experience of painting outdoors to add liveliness, freshness and authenticity to your work. Painting demonstrations and individual guidance will be given throughout. There is a studio at the centre for evening sessions and finishing off work. Do come along, paint and have fun with like-minded people within a friendly and enjoyable group.

Linda Hollingshead runs dynamic painting courses, well known for her enthusiasm and encouraging manner. With a lifetime of painting experience Linda shows practical ways to help you bring the best out in your painting. Bringing her in-depth knowledge and mastery of different media she demonstrates ways to try something new in easy steps and as an expert on colour she shows how to use colour most successfully in your art.

Before You Attend
What to Bring
Please select items appropriate to paint type you choose. Painting mediums of your choice. E.g. Watercolour, Acrylic, Oil, Pastel, Mixed-Media with collage.
- Suggested starter Palette Alizarin Crimson, a clean mixing yellow e.g. Primary yellow, transparent yellow, yellow medium Azo, Aurelian, Pthalo blue (green shade), Ultramarine blue, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Titanium white (except watercolour). BRUSHES Select brushes suitable to your medium. Acrylic, watercolour. Oil brushes, both flat & round tips. Include a 1” flat. (If using Acrylic please don’t use oil painting brushes i.e. Hog hair) Palette knife essential.
- PALETTE For Acrylics. A stay wet palette and a tear off palette, For Watercolour. Watercolour palette with painting wells or a plate. For Oils. Tear off palette, wood or glass palette.
- PAPERS, CANVASES & SURFACES There are lots of suitable surfaces, choose which you prefer. Acrylic paper e.g. Galleria or a canvas pad. Water colour paper. Pastel paper. Canvas boards or stretched canvas. Offcuts of card, paper and mount board are great for trying out ideas and techniques. If you wish to paint expressively the larger the surfaces are easier. It is important to bring a sketchbook.
- ACRYLIC GEL MEDIUMS AND TEXTURE PASTES A wide variety of gel mediums are available. Used for creating texture, impasto, sand effects etc. Bring any you wish to explore. Gesso is useful. A gel retarder is useful for Acrylic when working outdoors. Some Mixed Media options you may wish to try… Watercolour + Pastel: Acrylic + Collage: Watercolour + Tissue + gesso: Markers + Inks:
- MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS Sketching materials, old credit card, water pot, masking tape, wet wipes, kitchen roll, old rags, bull dog clips.
- COLLAGE ITEMS: papers, tissue paper, coloured decorative papers, magazine cuttings, old text and newspaper etc. A camera is useful. For outdoor painting an easel if you use one. Painting stool. Sun cream, hat, insect repellent, windproof jacket
