Can you tell the difference between an Oak and an Ash?
Aged 18-30 in Glasgow or Bradford and want to get to know your local trees better?
Discover your local trees in 2024!
The Field Studies Council are running free tree training courses in your community.
We will be delivering 21 training courses across Bradford and Glasgow from 2023 to late 2025, both in-person and online. The courses will take you on a journey through the seasons and will be localised to each city region, reflecting the needs and desires of your community!
If you’re aged 18-30yrs old, live in Bradford or the Glasgow City Region and have little to no tree knowledge, you will be able to book a place on one of the courses, please see T&Cs for further information.
What will I get out of attending?
You will learn how to identify, record, care for, and engage with your local trees, as well as discover related volunteer and career opportunities with the support of your tutor. You will not need any previous experience, just a willingness to explore and learn! You will also receive a certificate of attendance after your course.

- “The tutor was brilliant, very knowledgeable and friendly! The variety of trees we actively ID’d on the course was brilliant too, lots of variety!”
- “Sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know. This course was a real eye-opener.”
- “The course made me take much more notice of trees during my walks, bringing leaves and fruit back home for identification. I shared my new knowledge with friends and they also took more notice of trees. The course was well presented and easy to navigate.”
- “I liked the good rapport between people on the course; excellent presenter who really knew her subject and could walk us through the steps in identification and who had volunteering options available; good outdoor visit to trees in park”

Who are you again?
The training is delivered by the UK environmental education charity and leading publisher of wildlife ID guides, the Field Studies Council.
We can provide free training thanks to the wonderful support of this project led by Trees for Cities that aims to engage 20,000 young people with trees in Glasgow and Bradford. This project is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund.
We believe that every tree makes a difference. All the trees in our streets, gardens and towns play an important role in our ecosystem.
