Learn About Wildflowers

Plants in this section are angiosperms, the flowering plants of a large group that comprises those that have flowers and produce seeds enclosed within a carpel.  These may be perennial or annual.

Discover more about wildflowers in their habitats, their identification and understanding more about their form, function and ecology. Armed with a hand lens and simple guides you will be led by an expert tutor through a colourful world exploring the structures and forms which make up a wildflower. Learning new scientific terms to describe plant families, quick tips for ease of identification and demystifying the botanical keys are all part of the fun.

Wildflower Resources

Our Flowers of walks and waysides fold-out guide features 42 common wild flowers of Britain and Ireland. Often these walks and waysides are a haven for wildlife, supporting an amazing diversity of flowering plants.

The Woodland plants guide features 41 flowering plants of woods and forests. Beautiful colour The authors have grouped the paintings by flower colour: yellow, red, white and blue. Use this concise fold-out guide to quickly put a name to the flowers that you see.

Our Describing flowers guide describes and illustrates the main characters used in identification. Accompanying text on the reverse side includes a checklist of the main characters you can record in the field.

The Orchids Guide is a convenient and concise identification guide to 69 species, subspecies and hybrids of orchids. Written by two highly experienced botanists, it includes all the orchids that you are likely to see.
